Xcel Energy Electric Transmission and Natural Gas Transportation

 Electric Transmission

Natural Gas Transportation

Xcel Energy operates 17, 335 miles of transmission lines throughout our eight state service territory, with major control centers in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Golden, Colorado; and Amarillo, Texas.

Following are high-level summaries of 10-year planning and 20-year visioning for transmission in each of our operating companies: Northern States Power (MN, SD, ND, WI, MI); Public Service Company of Colorado; and Southwestern Public Service (TX, NM). We have prepared these documents to provide useful information to stakeholders about emerging transmission system needs and potential responsive plans. If you have questions or comments, please contact 1-800-895-4999.

Transmission lines are large power lines that move power at high voltages from power plants, where the power is made, to substations in neighborhoods. At substations, we reduce the voltage and move the power through distribution lines to homes and businesses.

We operate our transmission system on a non-discriminatory basis under the open access requirements of the federal government. This means that all wholesale buyers and sellers of electricity can use our transmission system under the same terms and conditions used to serve Xcel Energy’s own retail customers.
