New Transformer Oil Reaps Environmental Benefits

We seek to develop new technologies that bring clean, renewable energy onto our system at an affordable cost for our customers. Now we are helping to bring a natural resource-based technology to the market – soybean-based fluid for our transformers.

Beginning in 2008, we begin using Environtemp® FR3™ fluid in all single-phase pole- and pad-mounted transformers for residential – and some light commercial – applications. This revolutionary insulating product from Cooper Power Systems is made with food-grade soybean oil as its base. It is a non-toxic resource, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The fluid also quickly and thoroughly biodegrades in both soil and aquatic environments, which reduces environmental impact.

Benefits

The soy-based fluid has many benefits. It is a renewable resource that helps increase our nation’s energy independence. It supports the American economy. And insulating properties enable the transformers to carry higher loads during peak demand. This increases our power system’s reliability.

First of its type application

Adoption of this innovative fluid is another example of our dedication to improving the environment. We will be the first large utility in the nation to use soy-based transformers on such an extensive basis, ensuring a broad application of the technology.

Environmental leadership

What we do today will have an enormous impact on the next generation and generations to come. So it is imperative that we act now with purpose and vision in each of the areas of our Triple Bottom Line: social responsibility, environmental leadership and economic impact. Some of our environmental achievements include:
