Hiawatha Project

Xcel Energy is proposing major improvements to its electric infrastructure in south Minneapolis in order to meet the area’s growing need for electricity. We’re calling these improvements the “Hiawatha Project.”

The Hiawatha Project would construct two 115-kilovolt transmission lines along 29th Street E and the Hennepin County Regional Rail Authority Corridor in south Minneapolis. The 1.4 mile-long lines would connect to a new substation near the Hiawatha corridor and another new substation at Oakland Ave South. Pending regulatory review and approval, construction would begin in mid to late-2010 and be complete in 2011.

On April 24, 2009 we filed our Route Permit application (Application) with the (MPUC) -- officially beginning the state’s permitting process. The MPUC has since ruled that the application is complete. The Application includes the input we received from the public during months of outreach: multiple transmission line routes and design options (including two underground options) and alternative locations for both substations, as well as the comments we received from stakeholders and the resolutions passed by elected officials and community organizations.

  • Project Area Residents Notified

In May 2009 affected landowners (individuals whose properties abut or are near one of the alternative routes or substations locations) were notified about the filing of the Application and given information about the state’s permitting process and opportunities for public participation. We also placed this notice in local newspapers and sent informational postcards to several thousand other residents in the project area. A second postcard was sent to these residents informing them about the public meeting on June 18, 2009.
